On September 20, 2024, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team faced a tough battle against the York Lions at the Goldring Centre, ultimately falling in straight sets (26-28, 21-25, 23-25).
Toronto struggled offensively throughout the match, recording a negative hitting percentage (-.021) compared to York’s more efficient attack (.097). Despite the close scorelines, the Varsity Blues were unable to break through in key moments.
Hunter Arulpragasam led Toronto with 8 kills. Lukas Humle and Iannis Toma each contributed 6 kills, with Toma adding 2 blocks on defence. Setter Michael Hickey had a solid game with 21 assists and added an ace to his efforts.
The Lions were powered by Alexander Ko, who posted 9 kills and a .350 hitting percentage, while Dennis Cota and Chris Hoffman contributed 2 service aces each, putting constant pressure on the Blues’ reception.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams fighting hard in extra points before York sealed it 28-26. Toronto seemed to have opportunities in both the second and third sets, but untimely errors allowed York to take control, winning 25-21 and 25-23 to complete the sweep.
The Blues will look to bounce back in their next matchup tomorrow (Sept. 21) night, again taking on the Lions. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Goldring Centre.
