The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team swept the Guelph Gryphons 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-16) on Friday (Feb. 3) night at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport.
TORONTO STATS: Leading all players with 15 points, second-year left side Jayden Talsma recorded 14 kills and one solo block. Fourth-year left side Evan Falardeau had 12.5 points off 11 kills, one solo block and one assisted block.
Fifth-year outside hitter Mitchell Neuert added 10 points off eight kills, one ace and a solo block.
Second-year Davis Young was the Blues sole setter of the night, leading all players with 35 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues started the game strong recording four-straight points to open the first set. Aided by a red-hot Talsma, the Blues dominated the Gryphons claiming the set by a score of 25-15.
The Blues carried this momentum right into the second set. Opening the set ahead 8-1, there was no stopping the Blues attack. Although the Gryphons managed to shrink the Blues lead to four, errors would get the better of them. Coupled with the unmatched experience of Blues veterans Falardeau and Neuert, the Blues attack never waned and the team from Toronto secured the second set 25-20.
The third set was a near deja-vu of the previous two. The Blues got out to an early 11-4 lead and held this advantage through the remainder of play. Highlighted by the attacking prowl of Falardeau, Neuert and Talsma, the Blues would win their third-straight set by a score of 25-16.
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action Saturday, February 4 at Toronto Metropolitan University vs. the TMU Bold. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m.
