The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team suffered a three-set loss to the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night in a Canada West match between East Division rivals at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Manitoba took a 25-19 win in the opening set, then took a come-from-behind 25-22 win in the second before clinching the match with a convincing 25-11 victory in the third.
The turning point of the match was in that second set. The Cougars had a nice response to their opening-set loss as they led by as many as seven points in the early going and had a 16-11 advantage at the technical timeout, but Manitoba scored nine of the set’s final 12 points to take a commanding lead in the match.
The Bisons kept that momentum rolling into the third set as they served five aces and held the Cougars to a negative hitting percentage in that final frame.
Keziah Hoeppner and Light Uchechukwu led Manitoba offensively. Hoeppner led all players with 13 kills and hit .387 for the match, while Uchechukwu had 11 kills while hitting .409 in the win. Eve Catojo was dominant at the net with 10 blocks, while Katreena Bentley had 34 assists and Julia Arnold had a match-leading 19 digs.
Jessica Lerminiaux had a team-high nine kills for the Cougars, while Sierra Parris-Kruger finished with 17 digs.
The win moves Manitoba (5-10) into sole possession fourth place in Canada West’s East Division, while the Cougars fall to 4-9 with the setback.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. First serve is again set for 6:00 PM.
