Bisons men’s volleyball get hard-earned home opener win over Winnipeg, 3-0

The Bisons answered back after losing to the Wesmen earlier in the week.

WINNIPEG – Ben Carleton had 12 kills and Matthew Campbell added ten as Bisons men’s volleyball evened the score with the Winnipeg Wesmen, answering a Thursday loss with a straight set win on Saturday (33-31, 25-17, 32-30).

The victory boosts Manitoba to 1-1 while the Wesmen fall to 2-2.

Besides Carleton and Campbell, Bisons second-year middle Darian Koskie improved on his Thursday performance to be a go-to attacker. He tallied ten kills on 14 attacks for an outstanding .643 hitting percentage.

On the Wesmen side, veteran Daniel Thiessen led the team with 20 kills and four digs. Nigel Nielsen was also in double digits with 11 kills but needed 29 attacks to get there.

Unforced errors hurt the visitors, as they committed 27 attack errors (to Manitoba’s 13) and 12 service errors (to Manitoba’s 10) — enough to be the difference with two sets going well into extra time.

The team block for the Bisons was also an area of strength in this home opener. The team went for 20 block assists to the Wesmen’s six, led by Brendan Warren with six and Carleton with five.

Next up, the Bisons are on the road to play the Saskatchewan Huskies on November 12 and 13.
