A more consistent effort Saturday was not enough for the Winnipeg Wesmen to take down the top team in the country.
Nigel Nielsen had 15 kills and seven digs, but the Wesmen men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (29-27, 16-25, 25-13, 25-21) Canada West conference decision to the No. 1-ranked Alberta Golden Bears at the Duckworth Centre.
The loss set the Wesmen back to 2-2 on the season with a trip to Thompson Rivers next on the schedule.
The Wesmen hit .257 in the first set and .350 in the second in hanging with the defending national champions, but Winnipeg was held to .020 the rest of the way as Alberta improved to 3-1.
The Golden Bears hit .519 in a dominant and pivotal third set.
Liam Kristjanson had nine kills and Eric Dornez eight for the Wesmen, who hit .160 for the night and held the Bears to .000 in their second-set win.
Alex Krykewich, making his second career start, had a team-high 10 digs and also added four kills on eight attempts.
Alberta hit .287 on the night and was led by Jordan Canham’s 17 kills and Isaac Heslinga’s 15. Canham also added three aces, and Canham, two.
