MONTREAL – Basketball player Saransh Padhy of Stouffville, Ont., and volleyball’s Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 14, 2023.
Padhy, a 6-foot-6, 217-pound rookie centre, scored 43 points and grabbed eight rebounds in two tight losses to Concordia last week, a 66-64 setback on Thursday and an 89-86 decision on Saturday. The 19-year-old electrical engineering freshman reached the 20-point plateau in each contest. He shot an impressive 64.3 per cent from the floor (18/28), including a 2-for-4 effort from three-point range. He drained 71.4 per cent of his attempts from the free-throw line (5/7), averaged 23.5 minutes of playing time and was credited with one steal. Padhy enrolled at McGill last fall out of Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington, N.C.
Iannotti, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter, scored 31.5 points as the Martlets swept a pair of key games over the weekend, winning 3-0 at Sherbrooke on Jan. 12, followed by a 3-2 home-court victory over Laval on Sunday. The results left McGill tied for first place with a 9-4 record in the eight-team RSEQ conference. Iannotti, a 24-year-old software engineering senior, registered her points on the strength of 24 kills, three service aces and 4.5 stuff blocks over eight sets. On defence, she contributed 16 digs and three assists. A co-captain with the Martlets, Iannotti played her CEGEP volleyball at College Bois-de-Boulogne before joining the university ranks in 2019.
