Badgers Put On Defensive Showcase in Victory Over Gryphons

The No. 4 Brock women’s volleyball team brought the hammer against the Guelph Gryphons during a 3-0 victory.

The No. 4 Brock women’s volleyball team brought the hammer against the Guelph Gryphons during a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) victory at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 26.

Second-year outside hitter Sadie Dick registered 10 kills on 26 swings (.269 per cent) to lead the Brock attack en route to winning their eighth consecutive set in their last three games.

Brock recorded a season-high 59 digs as second-year libero Aleiah Torres enjoyed a career-high 24 digs. Third-year setter Sara Rohr posted 26 assists.

The Badgers rallied whenever they fell behind, including a stretch where the Gryphons led 12-7 in the third set.

Brock worked its way back into the game as Grace Pyatt recorded a kill and threw up a fundamental block alongside Emily Foest, including a pair of service aces by Dick.

“This was a real team win. We were confident in every single person who came in, and they wanted the ball,” Dick said. “This match was important for us because it showed how well we’re connecting on a team level.”

Pyatt finished with nine kills and three blocks as Foest added 11 digs.

“We like to keep a level head. Whenever we get down a couple of points, it may show that on the scoreboard, but we don’t feel it on the court,” Dick added. “We’re confident that we’ll close the gap.”

The Badgers deployed several first- and second-year players during the match, including left side Laurin Ainsworth, setter Lauren Teehan and outside hitter Meera Sayal.

Lauren Teehan delivered a number of nice sets to our middle. It was great to see Laurin Ainsworth and Meera Sayal each get their first kills of the season,” said head coach Steve Delaney. “Jaimie Holland also came into the game and did some great things in the middle for us. Sam Casey and Alanna Norris are defensive wizards for us. Gigi Markotic also provided kills for us. It was positive for us as a team to have everyone get experience on the court.”

Next, the Badgers (4-0) conclude the first half of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season with one last match in Guelph on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. Watch the game live on OUA.tv.
