BRANDON, Man. – Keely Anderson had a record setting night at the BU Healthy Living Centre, lifting the Bobcats to a critical 3-2 (25-15, 26-24, 16-25, 10-25, 15-11) win and breaking a school record in the process.
The rookie from Outlook, Sask. set a Brandon University women’s volleyball single match record with nine aces, surpassing the previous mark set by Shanlee McLennan back on January 30, 2016.
Although Anderson finished an ace shy of the rare triple-double, the performance was impressive and gave the Bobcats an important win with just three league matches remaining.
With these two teams being so close in the east division standings it had the feel of a playoff match.
The Bobcats stormed out of the games in the first set, putting up four aces in the frame.
Anderson had her third early in the second and took over from there, putting up six aces through set and up a massive block to end it after trailing 24-22.
The Wesmen then went on a 10-2 run in the middle of the third, hitting .390 as a team to the Bobcats .097.
The fourth was all Winnipeg, but the Bobcats took control in the fifth before Anderson’s record setting ace.
Anderson had 11 kills and 13 digs to go with her nine aces while Rayvn Wiebe also finished with a double-double, putting up team highs in kills (18) and digs (19).
The Wesmen were led by Ashleigh Laube’s season-high 22 kills while Emma Parker was four-short of tying her season high with 21 digs.
The win improves Brandon’s record to 7-6 and puts the Bobcats in second spot in the Canada West east division, one match ahead of the Wesmen at 6-7.
The records and Thursday’s five-set thriller sets up an important rematch Saturday, which goes at the U of W’s Duckworth Centre. First serve is set for 6:45 p.m.
