Acts of Service: Canham’s love language helps Bears over UBCO Heat

EDMONTON – Jordan Canham tied two Bears serving records – total career aces & aces in a single game – to help lead the Alberta Golden Bears over the UBCO Heat 3-1 (25-12, 18-25, 25-18, 25-15) Friday night at the Saville Centre.

Canham finished with six service aces, 136 for his Canada West career to place him t-1st in program history in both fields. He added a game-high 13 kills and was a leading figure in the win for Alberta. Renn Petryk paced the Heat with 12 kills of his own.

The win moves the Bears to 21-2, sitting comfortably in first place in the CW since clinching the top seed last weekend. The UBCO Heat fall to 7-16, and are officially eliminated from playoff contention.

The match started with an incredible sequence from Alberta’s Canham. After an early point, Canham stepped up to the service line and rattled off four straight aces to force a quick UBCO timeout. He would serve for two more Alberta points before the Heat were able to put a stop to the sequence. They would not put a stop to the Bears offence as a whole however, as the hosts hit to the tune of a .500 percentage during the set. Canham was the man of the frame, recording an astounding five service aces to go with two kills.

The visitors would settle in for the second set, amongst a plethora of missed serves, jumping to a 14-12 lead midway through the frame led by Renn Petryk who contributed four kills. The Heat certainly improved on the offensive end on their way to a 25-18 set win, hitting .400 compared to the Bears .077 mark.

The third set saw both teams operating at a high-octane level and staying within a couple points of each other for the vast majority of the frame. But the Bears would rattle off an 8-3 run to end the second and took the set 25-18 to lead 2-1 heading into the fourth set.

The Bears would take care of business in the fourth, and final, set. They hit a scorching .800 to go with 13 kills as they displayed two-way dominance to take the game 3-1.

The teams return to battle tomorrow night at the Saville Centre.
