TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women’s volleyball team extended their win streak to six games Saturday night against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-23) victory. Throughout their streak, the team has only dropped one set and the win adds to their 9-4 record.
In the second match with the Thunderwolves, TMU hit 0.213% while holding Lakehead to as many attack errors as kills for a 0.000%.
“We have a lot of team goals, visual goals that we’re working on in practice. We’re taking that time seriously in the gym and off the court as well,” setter Alicia Lam said. “I think we’re building towards a really big goal. I think that’s something that we’re gonna achieve this year.”
First set went by smoothly, with the Bold opening scoring and maintaining the lead throughout.

The second saw longer rallies and Lakehead going back-and-forth in scoring with the Bold early on. TMU remained dominant on the court, however, racking up points on a 17-5 run and eventually taking the set.

The Thunderwolves took the lead to start the third set. Down by three with five points to Lakehead’s eight, head coach Dustin Reid called a timeout.
“Six of Lakehead’s eight points in that moment came from serving, attacking or passing mistakes,” Reid said. “We wanted to remind them to be aggressive, but if you can’t play aggressive then keep the ball in play and play smart.”

The Bold managed to catch up and eventually overtake Lakehead, but they kept a tight game, allowing only a one or two-point difference at a time. Eventually, TMU took the set.
Julie Moore led the team in points (15.5), kills (11) and digs (16) while Lam added 29 assists. Middle Bethany Smith, who recorded her season high in kills (7) Saturday night, said the team’s attack was a joint effort.
“We’ve really been working, middles and setters, on establishing our connection throughout these games, so it’s really nice to see that translate from practice into an actual match and really get comfortable with that connection,” Smith said.
The team will take to the court next Saturday (January 21) to face the York Lions on the road at Tait McKenzie Centre. First serve flies at 8 p.m.
