HAMILTON – After a record-breaking fundraising campaign that raised $149,488 from more than 1,000 donors, McMaster Athletics & Recreation has announced the team challenge winners of the 2024 Marauder Giving Challenge.
This year’s event not only set new benchmarks for fundraising but also showcased the competitive spirit and camaraderie of McMaster’s varsity teams, who engaged donors through team-specific funding pages and a series of creative challenges throughout the day.
“The Marauder Giving Challenge exemplifies the passion of our student-athletes and the dedication of our supporters,” said Keenan Jeppesen, Director of Athletics & Recreation. “These results highlight the incredible power of community in shaping the future of Marauder Athletics.”
Challenge Winners
Throughout the campaign, donors were invited to participate in a series of team challenges designed to amplify engagement and reward competitive fundraising efforts. The results are as follows:
- Veteran Challenge (Most Overall Donors): Golf (OUA), Swimming (U SPORTS)
- Rookie Challenge (Most First-Time Donors): Golf, Figure Skating, Baseball
- MVP Challenge (Largest Donation): Swimming, Cross Country/Track, Women’s Basketball
- Early Lead Challenge (Most Donors Between 7–9 AM): Golf
- Half Time Challenge (Most Donors Between 12–1 PM): Golf
- Final Countdown Challenge (Most Donors Between 6–8 PM): Figure Skating
- Super Fan Challenge (Top 3 Teams): Men’s Lacrosse, Swimming, Cross Country/Track
Spotlight on Success
The campaign saw exceptional participation from teams across McMaster’s varsity family, with Swimming leading the way by raising $33,585. Cross Country/Track followed with $16,305, and Men’s Lacrosse rounded out the top three with $12,360. Teams with increased engagement from last year’s campaign were Golf, Figure Skating and Baseball, who each rallied their alumni and fans to increase their number of supporters for 2024.
These funds will directly impact student-athletes by supporting travel, training equipment, team meals, and program development.
Nordic Skiing athlete David Harris reflected on the value of donor support.
“After high school, without sports, I felt a bit lost. But in joining this team, I have found my friends, I grew, and I have found an outlet to improve every day. So, on behalf of myself and everyone of similar experience, thank you for giving us the invaluable gift of time as part of this team.”
Golf’s success extended beyond fundraising totals to claiming multiple challenge victories. Third-year golfer Kaylee Jeon spoke to the program’s gratitude.
“Being a member of this team means more than just playing a sport,” said Jeon. “Every contribution is an investment in our growth, ultimately pushing us to become stronger athletes and individuals.”
Celebrating the Community
In addition to individual team success, the Giving Challenge fostered a sense of collective purpose and pride among donors, alumni, and student-athletes. McMaster’s Head Cross Country and Track Coach and 1988 Marauder alum, Paula Schnurr, emphasized the importance of community support.
“I am always so grateful and appreciative of the support from our Marauder Alumni, Family and Friends. Many of you have generously supported McMaster’s running program for a number of years, and with your presence at competitions, kind messages of encouragement, and financial support, we continue to make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes.”
A Year-Round Opportunity
While the 2024 Giving Challenge has come to a close, the opportunity to support Marauder Athletics remains open year-round. Every donation, no matter the size, plays a vital role in the success and development of student-athletes both on and off the field.
