Badgers complete sweep over Marauders

The Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team set program history at Bob Davis Gymnasium. 

After falling in heartbreaking fashion the night prior, the Brock Badgers men’s volleyball team came out with a strong start and delivered a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-23, 25-16) of the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, Nov. 23.  

This win marks the first time the men’s volleyball team has defeated the Marauders, the three-time defending Ontario University Athletics (OUA) champions, since the program’s revival in 2016-17. 

The Badgers were led by Kylar Code who had 13.5 points off 10 kills, two aces and 1.5 blocks and Devin Cooney who had 10 kills and 0.5 blocks for 10.5 points. 

First-year outside hitter Lucas Bouwers had an impressive first set as he notched four aces to help give the Badgers a 19-13 advantage, and he delivered the final kill to make it 25-20 for the Badgers. 

Neither team could gain a significant advantage in the second frame as no team led by more than two points. A timeout from the Badgers at 23-23 led to a Marauders’ service error which was then followed by a block by Code and Jack Barrett to seal the set. 

In the third set, the Badgers took advantage of the Marauders notching nine errors to only six kills on 20 attempts for a -.150 hitting percentage. A service ace from Nanle Yusuf, who came off the bench, helped deliver the Badgers a convincing 25-16 victory for the sweep. 

As a team, the Badgers hit an impressive .333 while the Marauders mustered a .129 hitting percentage.  

Adam Shapcott, a second-year setter, led all players with 25 assists. 

Up next, the Badgers are off until the new year as they finish the first half of the season with a 4-6 record. They will open up 2025 with a weekend series against the Windsor Lancers that starts on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. The game can be seen on OUA.tv.
