Zimmerman Amasses 1500 Career Assists as Gaels Top York

Queen’s Men’s Volleyball headed York to take on the Lions in Friday night’s match up. After an intense back and forth, the Gaels secured their eighth victory of the season (21-25, 25-21, 25-16, 11-25, 15-9)

Nikola Mitrovic (Economics) led the Gaels in points with 15.5 from 14 kills, one service ace, and one block.

“I tried to do my best and play my role for the team and take what opportunities were given to me the best I could,” Mitrovic said.

The Gaels started out the match slow, finding their groove after four back-to-back home games. Despite struggling at the service line, Queen’s picked up the pace and closed the gap between the Lions towards the end of the first set.

Queen’s maintained this momentum into the second and went point for point with York, taking the set aided by big kills from Dax Tompkins (Arts), Lachlan McBride (Law), and Mitrovic.

In the third set, the Gaels put on a dominate performance, cleaning up their service game and becoming hungrier on offense. Their performance halted York and brought them a resounding 26-11 win.

Not to be outdone, the Lions put on a show during the fourth with an unstoppable offense. They forced the fifth set, finding holes in the Gaels defense.

Despite dropping the fourth, the Gaels comfortably pulled ahead early in the fifth and maintained their momentum to secure the road win.  

In the win, third year setter Chris Zimmerman (Arts) amassed 1500 career assists. Zimmerman also maintains an average of 9.34 assists per game this season.

“He’s one of our captains and I think he leads us so well on the court, its just the calm personality that he brings,” Mitrovic remarked. “He has that faith in you to keep putting balls away.”

With the win, Queen’s Men’s Volleyball’s record on the season improves to 8-1, and their win streak increases to four.
