Three Marauders named Marauder Athlete of the Week

HAMILTON, Ont. — In recognition of outstanding achievements last weekend, Ana Morariu from McMaster’s women’s cross country team, men’s volleyball Jared Kuiken, and McMaster’s women’s volleyball Sullie Sundara have earned Marauder Athlete of the Week honours.

Women’s Cross Country – Ana Morariu (Kincardine, Ont.)
On Saturday, the McMaster cross country team travelled to Kelowna, B.C. for the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships. Fourth-year Morariu and the Marauders finished seventh in the nation. Morariu led the Marauder women, crossing the finish line in 14th place with a final time of 27:41. Morariu received national honours and was named to the Women’s Second All-Canadian Team for her exceptional performance.  

Men’s Volleyball – Jared Kuiken (London, Ont.)
The second-year guided the Birds to two consecutive victories against the Guelph Gryphons on Friday and Saturday. In the first match, the 6’7″ middle recorded 13 kills on 18 attack attempts (.667), along with four blocks and five digs, good for 17 points within five sets. During a McMaster 3-0 sweep on Saturday afternoon, Kuiken played in all three sets, tacking on 8.5 points made up of five kills, two solo blocks, one assisted block, and a serving ace. Kuiken’s early presence has been felt in the OUA as he ranks seventh in the province, averaging 0.79 blocks per set.

Women’s Volleyball – Sullie Sundara (Kanata, Ont.) *OUA Athlete of the Week*
The fourth-year captain led the undefeated U SPORTS no. 2 Marauders to two victories against Guelph over the weekend. Sundara recorded a total of 37 points, earning 15 kills on Friday evening and 17 kills on Saturday. The Social Psychology major also managed 27 digs and three blocks. Sundara currently ranks second in the OUA in kills per set (4.12) and total kills (70). Sundara and the Marauders aim to maintain their perfect record against the undefeated Western Mustangs this weekend.
