THIS WEEK IN SPARTA

LANGLEY, British Columbia – With the end of the fall seasons This Week in Sparta has all six winter teams in action, with men’s and women’s volleyball and men’s hockey at home and men’s and women’s basketball and women’s hockey on the road.
 
HOME
MEN’S HOCKEY 
Friday, November 15 vs MacEwan Griffins, Aldergrove, B.C.

NOTABLE 

  • The Spartans are currently in fourth spot in the West division at 2-8, while the Griffins are in third place in the East division at 4-5-1.
  • Last weekend on the road TWU lost to the No. 8 Saskatchewan Huskies 6-1, and 7-1 in Saskatoon, Sask.
  • Last weekend the MacEwan Griffins lost twice to the Alberta Golden Bears in a home-and-home series in Edmonton, Alta., losing 6-3 at Alberta and 3-2 in overtime at home.
  • TWU is currently 2-6 lifetime against the Griffins. Last season TWU lost 5-3, and 4-3 to MacEwan at home at the Langley Events Centre.
  • Because of scheduling conflicts both games against the Griffins will be played at the Aldergrove Credit Union in Aldergrove, B.C.

  • The No. 7 Spartans are currently in fourth spot in Canada West at 4-2, while the UBC Okanagan Heat are in 11th spot at 2-2 in Canada West.
  • Last weekend at home the Spartans lost 3-0 to the No. 1 Thunderbirds at the Langley Events Centre, while the Heat were swept by the No. 4 Thompson Rivers WolfPack 3-0, and 3-1 in Kamloops, B.C.
  • TWU is currently 31-5 lifetime against the Heat. TWU’s last loss to UBC Okanagan in conference play was 3-1 on October 18, 2017, at the Langley Events Centre.
  • The Spartans are currently on a 15-match winning streak against the Heat.

  • The No. 4 Spartans are currently in third spot in Canada West at 4-2, while the UBC Okanagan Heat are in sixth spot at 3-1 in Canada West.
  • Last weekend the Spartans split with the No. 7 Thunderbirds in a home-and-home series, winning 3-0 at the LEC, and losing 3-1 at War Memorial in Vancouver, B.C.
  • Last week the Heat split with the Thompson Rivers WolfPack winning 3-1, and losing 3-1 in Kamloops, B.C.
  • TWU is currently 44-4 lifetime against UBC-O. TWU’s last loss to UBC Okanagan in conference play was 3-0 on February 25, 2022, in Kelowna, B.C.
  • The Spartans have never lost to the Heat at home in conference play.
  • The Spartans are currently on an eight-match winning streak against the Heat.

  • The Spartans are currently 1-3 in Canada West play, and are in fifth spot in the Pacific Division, while UBC Okanagan is 2-2 and in fourth spot in the Pacific Division of Canada West.
  • Last weekend the Spartans split with the Mount Royal Cougars, winning 84-74 in overtime, and losing 64-45 in Calgary, Alta.
  • Last week the Heat were swept by the Fraser Valley Cascades, 76-63, and 84-75 in overtime, on the road in Abbotsford, B.C.
  • TWU is currently 19-6 lifetime against UBC Okanagan. In their last meeting in the Canada West play-off last season in Abbotsford, B.C. the Spartans lost 63-57 in the play-in game. TWU split the conference season series last year with UBC Okanagan losing 77-69, and winning 91-72 in Langley, B.C.

  • Trinity Western is currently on a program best four game winning streak.
  • Last weekend at home TWU swept the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1, and 4-1 at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
  • Last weekend the MacEwan Griffins lost twice to the Alberta Pandas in a home-and-home series in Edmonton, Alta., losing 4-1 at home, and 1-0 in overtime at Alberta.
  • TWU is currently 3-5 lifetime against the Griffins. Last season TWU split the two game season series in Edmonton, losing 4-1 and winning 5-3.
  • The Spartans and the Griffins have split each of their last three series (3-3).

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby, as well as women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
