Queen’s Men’s Volleyball took on the Windsor Lancers for a second time. The Gaels walked away with a straight set win (25-19, 26-24).
After last night’s loss, the Gaels came out strong and never looked back. They kept to their playing style of “swinging high and hard.”
“It was like the first time this year that we came out all three sets with the energy and starting fast. I think it just has to do with a relentless belief in our process from the service line and staying aggressive,” Outside Zig Licis (Computer Engineering) said.
Licis led the Gaels in points with 14.5 from 12 kills, two blocks, and one service ace. Licis also achieve 500 career points this weekend.
“I think we did a better job in reception, and I think that Chris did a really good job bouncing back from yesterday. He ran a really good offense today and again just sticking with the process of being aggressive and swinging high and hard,” Licis added.
After dominating the Lancers in the first, Queen’s followed it up with two more decisive sets. They paired their aggressive presence at the net with strong defense in the back court.
Libero Tobias Jeffries (Engineering) anchored the Gaels on defense, with saves from all over the court.
“For Toby its just knowing that he has the space to ride the wave and he’s going to have high points and low points but the team trusts him, we trust him as a coaching staff, and I think he feels that we all have confidence in him now and as a result he is really believing in his own skills and his ability to execute,” Head Coach Gabe deGroot remarked.
The straight set win marks an important shift in mindset for the team.
“I think last night we got too caught up in the balls that beat us and the offensive opportunities that they had that they got past us. Instead, we put those aside and we moved on quicker today and as a result we were more deliberate about our upcoming opportunities,” deGroot said.
Win the win, the Gaels’ record on the season improves to 5-1.
The Gaels are back in action on Friday, Nov 9, at 8pm, in the ARC, taking in the Waterloo Warriors. Tickets are free for students and are available on the Queen’s ticket website.
