SASKATOON, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Huskie men’s volleyball kicked off the 2024-25 season with a convincing win over the Mount Royal Cougars Friday night at the Physical Activity Complex, downing the Cougars in straight sets.
With the win the Dogs hand the Cougars their first loss of the season while getting off to a hot start after opening the season with back-to-back bye weeks.
It was all-round dominant performance from the Huskies, who finished the match with an impressive .419 hitting percentage led by middles Emmett Graham and Jacob Vaird who converted on over 70% of their attacks. The dynamic due also led the team in scoring with 14 and 11 points each.
The game started with a tightly-contested opening set which saw both teams exchange scoring runs before the home team pulled away with 5-3 run to take the first set 25-20.
From there is was all Huskies, with the Huskies taking commanding leads thanks to runs of 7-1 and 15-6 in the second and 6-1 and 6-2 in the third.
For the visiting team, they wer led by Ryan John and Paul Dionne who recorded 8.5 and 8 points respectively.
Veteran setter Noah Opseth put another another fantastic performance for the Dogs, earning 35 kill assists and two assisted blocks.
The Dogs and Cougars are back at it Saturday evening at the Physical Activity Complex, with the first serve set to follow the women’s game at 3:00 PM.
