WINDSOR, Ont. – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) men’s volleyball season got underway Friday night, as the Bold dropped their season opener 3-0. Despite the lopsided scoreline, TMU was competitive in each set against Windsor. The Bold were led offensively by Jacob Walker with 11 kills.
Both teams began the opening set slowly. Several service and defensive errors by both sides kept the first set score close. Liam Cobb played a big role in the Bold’s early success, with a pair of critical blocks. Despite keeping the set close, these service errors would come back to sink the Bold, as they dropped the first set by a score of 25-23.
Things remained tight as the second set began. The Bold, who held an early advantage in the set, saw the Lancers quickly re-establish control. Lyam Krapp, who finished with eight kills, was instrumental in keeping the set close as Windsor ripped off service ace after service ace. Despite Krapp’s best efforts, the Lancers pulled away for the 25-20 set victory.
The Bold were resilient in the final set, however the Lancer wall was too much for TMU to overcome. The Bold finished with a .195 hitting percentage, well below the Lancers’ .312 percentage on the night. This, coupled with the Bold’s 12 service errors helped the Lancers wrap up victory in the third set, by a score of 25-21.
The Bold are back in action tomorrow afternoon, facing the Lancers in a rematch from Windsor. The game will be streamed at OUA.tv beginning at 3:30.
