May 14, 2024: Canada won two medals, both silver, in the final of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Continental Tour that was played on Juan Dolio beach in the Dominican Republic.
The U.S. women’s duo of Molly Shaw and Chloe Loreen won the gold match over Canadians Sarah Pavan and Molly McBain 2-0 (21-14, 21-14) on Tuesday. The women’s bronze medal went to the Mexicans Atenas Gutierrez and Susana Torres who defeated Dominicans Julibeth Payano/Crismil Paniagua 2-0 (21-18, 21-16).
Also of the U.S., Miles Evans and Chase Budinger defeated Canadians Sam Schachter and Daniel Dearing 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) to win gold. The Cuban pair of Jorge Alayo and Noslen Díaz took the bronze medal after beating Mexico’s Miguel Sarabia and Gabriel Cruz with a score of 2-0 (21-13, 21-14).
A total of 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams from 18 countries were entered in the competition.
The road to Paris continues for beach athletes who can still qualify via the World Ranking or the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament Finals, which will be held in late June in Mexico.
In the Beach Pro Tour Futures event this past weekend in China, Canada also landed a silver! Jake MacNeil and Alex Russell came second to Brazil’s Pedro Oliveira and Henrique Barros in a tie-break 2-1 (15-21, 21-16, 15-9) contest.
