WVB RECAP: Gryphons Earn 10th Win of the Season With 3-1 Victory Over Windsor

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women’s volleyball team picked up their 10th win of the 2023-24 season Friday night (Jan. 26) at the Gryphons Athletics Centre thanks to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Windsor Lancers. With the win the Gryphons improve to 10-3 on the season and hold on to 4th-place in the conference while the Lancers fall to 2-11 on the year. 

The winning effort was led by second-year Ancaster native Mia Miskovic, who recorded a game-high 17.5 points, tying her career-high which she set last week against Toronto. The creative writing major totaled 14 kills with a .370 hitting percentage while adding 3 service aces and an assisted block. Outside hitter Hailey Holland also surpassed the 15-point mark, recording 15.5 thanks to 14 kills and 1.5 blocks. Leftside hitters Briar Crerar and Leah Stewart rounded out the group of Gryphons to reach double-digit points, with Crerar recording 13 and Stewart tying her season-high of 11. Third-year setter Alexa Sheilds was fantastic once again, finishing the game with 56 kill assists. 

It was a tough start for the Gryphons to open the match, falling behind the Lancers by as much as 8-points before storming back to tie the opening set 23-23. The visiting team would then commit 3 errors in addition to a kill from Mia Miskovic to give the Gryphons a 27-25 first set win. The second set saw a much more closely contested match, with both teams trading short scoring runs, before a 5-1 run following a 20-20 gave the Gryphons a 2-0 advantage heading into the third frame. With the game on the line, the Lancers were able to hold off the Gryphons in the late stages of the third, taking the third set 31-29. In the fourth, a 6-0 run that featured kills from Hailey Holland, Mia Miskovic, and Briar Crerar which gave the Gryphons a 13-8 lead would prove to be too much for the visiting Lancers as they fell 25-21. 

The Gryphons (10-3) will face off with the Lancers again tomorrow afternoon (Jan. 27), with the first serve scheduled for 4pm. The match will also serve as the Gryphons 2023-24 ‘Alumni Day’ celebration. Tickets can be purchased online at gryphons.ca/tickets.
