Farokhizad, Igbinosun and Knox named Brock University Athletes of the Week

Yazdan Farokhizad (Tehran, Iran) of the men’s wrestling team, Keshawn Igbinosun (Scarborough, Ont) of the men’s track and field team and Mackenna Knox (Burlington, Ont) of the women’s volleyball team have been named the Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Dec. 3. 

For the third time this season, Farokhizad took home a gold medal. The Sport Management major placed first at the University of Toronto Open on Saturday, Dec. 2. in the men’s 90-kilogram weight class. Farokhizad won his first match by technical fall 11-0 and followed it up with a semifinal victory via fall over Kareem Yakubu of Queen’s. He then defeated Ryan Barney of Lakehead by technical fall 10-0, winning three straight matches en route to the first-place finish.  

At the Bob Vigars Season Opener, Igbinosun captured first place in the 300-metre dash, 200-metre dash and 4×200-metre relay. The Teacher Education major crossed the finish line in the 300m dash in a time of 35 seconds and 54 milliseconds, finishing 41 milliseconds over Ben Lemon, the silver medalist. Igbinosun’s time bests his finish of 35.57 from last season at the 2023 Ontario University Athletics Championships. He also placed first in the 200m dash in a time of 22.83, crossing the line 57 milliseconds faster than the second-place finisher. With Ayden Tessier, Tyrell Smikle, Mitch McGarr, Igbinosun placed first in the 4x200m relay in a time of 1:34.35

Knox, a first-year setter, notched career highs in assists (36), digs (12) and blocks (1.5), leading the team to a 3-0 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday, Dec. 2 in her second start of the season. The Teacher Education major started the third set on Friday, Dec. 1 and distributed 14 assists, helping facilitate the Brock offence to a game-high 16 kills in a set, while also chipping in with four digs.
