GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre the No. 10-ranked Gryphons men’s volleyball team suffered just the second loss of the season to the No. 6-ranked McMaster Marauders. In a match between two of the top teams in the OUA and the country, the Marauders captured a straight sets victory to improve to 6-2 while the Gryphons fall to 7-2 on the season. Following the loss the Gryphons still sit atop the conference standings while the Marauders move up to fourth.
The two teams played three tightly-contested sets with set scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-22 in favour of the Marauders. The first set saw a back-and-forth affair before the Marauders were able to pull ahead late in the opening frame. A strong start to second set by McMaster would see the Gryphons spend much of the period attempting to cut into the Marauder lead but the early lead would prove to be too much. The final set saw the Gryphons get off to their best start of the night and a 10-5 lead before a timeout from the visiting team would spark a run for the Marauders. Despite another impressive streak of points from the Gryphons the defending OUA champions would pull off another comeback and take the straight sets victory.
The Gryphons were led by the duo of Cameron Chadwick and Jacob Schweyer, who each surpassed the double-digit points mark scoring 10 and 10.5. Bailey, a third-year right side hitter, led the team with 8 kills while adding 2.5 blocks. Chadwick meanwhile produced 7 kills and three service aces. The Gryphons will now take a month off before returning to action in the new year to host the Toronto Varsity Blues on january 4, 2024.
