GUELPH, Ont. – A total of seven Gryphon varsity teams are featured in the latest edition of the ‘Gryphon Weekend Wrap’ for the period covering November 24 to 26, 2023.
Headlining the weekend of Gryphon varsity action was the U of G swimming teams which made the trip to Toronto for the Stratten Divisional Championships which was hosted by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The Gryphon performances were headlined by the team’s ‘Swimmers of the Meet’ Jessica Schwindt and Wilder Stairs. Schwindt, a rookie swimmer and Oakville native, competed in a challenging program of events on Saturday which included the 400m individual medley, 200m backstroke, 800m freestyle, and relay events. For Stairs, a Chicago, Illinois native in his second year with the program, his weekend was highlighted by an impressive performance on Sunday in the 200m butterfly which earned him a spot on the team’s Top 10 list. Other student-athletes on the men’s side with strong performances included Marcus Selva who earned top ten splits in the 50m & 100m freestyle relays, Thomas Steele who joined the Top 10 team list in the 400m individual medley, as did Jacob Stojanovic in the 50m butterfly relay split. The men’s relay team also captured third in the 4x50m freestyle relay. On the women’s side Sunbin Kim’s 100m breaststroke performance earned her a spot on the top ten swim for the Gryphons.
On the court the U SPORTS No. 10-ranked men’s volleyball team remain undefeated with a 3-1 road win against the York Lions, with the women’s volleyball team also remaining undefeated thanks to their victory over York on Friday night (Nov. 24) in Toronto. The Gryphon’s men’s basketball team picked up a big road win, defeating the OUA West-leading Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday (Nov. 25) in Waterloo to snap Laurier’s 6-game win streak. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams split their home-and-home series with the Golden Hawks, with the Gryphons women’s basketball team narrowly missing out on taking both games, with Laurier edging Guelph 61-59 on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 25) at Laurier’s Athletic Complex.
On the ice, the men’s hockey team went 1-1 in back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. First defeating the Waterloo Warriors 4-3 on the road Friday night at Columbia Icefield Arena, thanks to a trio of third period goals, before falling to the U of T Varsity Blues 8-1 Saturday night at Varsity Arena in Toronto. On the women’s side, the No. 6-ranked Gryphons women’s hockey team captured a convincing 5-0 road win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday to improve to 10-1-2 on the season and extend their lead over the rest of the OUA West Division to 8-points. The win also marked the fourth time this season in which the team has held their opponent scoreless and second career win for rookie goaltender Sophie Helfenstein.
