MONTREAL – Sean Herscovitch of Montreal and Clara Poiré of Blainville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 26, 2023.
Herscovitch, a 5-foot-9, 162-pound guard on the men’s basketball team, scored 37 points and grabbed six rebounds as McGill split two games last week, a 111-61 loss at Bishop’s on Nov. 23 and a 66-64 upset victory over first-place UQAM on Nov. 25. The 23-year-old political science senior scored what proved to be the winning basket against UQAM. Over the two games, Herscovitch was successful on 47.4 per cent of his field-goal attempts (13/27) – including a 7-for-13 performance from three-point range – and sunk four of his six free-throw attempts. He added five steals and six assists, while averaging 29 minutes of court-time. A product of Dawson College, he enrolled at McGill in 2020.
Poiré, a 6-foot-2, right-side hitter on the women’s volleyball team, scored 27 points in a 3-2 loss at Laval last Friday. Over her five sets played, the 24-year-old senior registered a career-high 24 kills, two service aces and a pair of assisted stuff blocks. She added a career-high 19 digs and two assists on defence. A product of College Lionel-Groulx, Poiré enrolled at McGill in 2019 and completed an undergraduate degree in kinesiology last year but has returned to work on a graduate certificate in accounting.
