MONTREAL – Volleyball player Victoria Iannotti, and the rowing duo of Jacob Lofaro and Federico Sanchez, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 12, 2023.
Iannotti, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter from St. Laurent, Que., scored 37 points as the Martlets swept a pair of key games over the weekend, defeating Sherbrooke 3-1 at home on Friday (Nov. 10), followed by a 3-2 win over Laval in Quebec City on Saturday (Nov. 11). The results left McGill just two points out of first place with a 6-3 record in the eight-team RSEQ conference. Iannotti, a 24-year-old software engineering senior, registered her points on the strength of 33 kills, one service ace, two stuff blocks and a pair of assisted blocks over nine sets. On defence, she contributed 22 digs and four assists. A co-captain with the Martlets, Iannotti played her CEGEP volleyball at College Bois-de-Boulogne before joining the university ranks in 2019.
Lofaro, from Grimsby, Ont., and Sanchez, a Montrealer, teamed up to win a silver medal in the men’s double sculls to help the McGill men’s team finish seventh of 20 schools, at the Canadian University Rowing Association championships at Burnaby, B.C., over the weekend. Lofaro is a 20-year-old civil engineering junior, while Sanchez is a 28-year-old science junior majoring in kinesiology. Their racing shell crossed the finish line in seven minutes, 5.99 seconds. Brock won the race in 7:04.68, while Queen’s was third in 7:11.05.
