Gryphon Weekend Wrap (Oct. 20-22, 2023)

GUELPH, Ont. – A total of 11 Gryphon varsity teams are featured in the latest edition of the ‘Gryphon Weekend Wrap’ for the period covering October 20 to 22, 2023.
 

In playoff action, the Gryphons women’s rugby team captured an OUA semifinal win over the Brock Badgers and will now play for a conference title this Friday, October 27 in Kingston against their perennial rivals, the Queen’s Gaels. On the men’s side, the Gryphons men’s rugby team completed their undefeated regular season with a win against the Western Mustangs and earned a bye through to the semifinal round of the OUA postseason.

A pair of Gryphon varsity teams saw their seasons come to a close this past weekend with the U of G football team falling to the Carleton Ravens and being eliminated from playoff contention. Meanwhile in Toronto, the Gryphons field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to the York Lions in their OUA semifinal matchup.

On the soccer pitch, both Gryphon teams captured back-to-back wins over the Algoma Thunderbirds and will next be seen in the preliminary round of the OUA playoffs this Wednesday, October 25 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. 

For the Gryphon hockey teams, it was a memorable weekend, with the women’s team taking down the No. 7-ranked Nipissing Lakers and the men’s team securing a comeback win against the No. 8-ranked Queen’s Gaels. 

Back at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the U of G men’s lacrosse team earned a regular season finale win over the Mustangs and secured home field for their Baggataway Cup play-in game this Sunday, October 29. The Gryphons women’s lacrosse team wrapped up their regular season play with two games in Peterborough, and will now shift their focus to the OUA Women’s Lacrosse Championships this upcoming weekend in Kingston (Oct. 27-29).
