This past weekend, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team competed in the Humber Cup, achieving a fifth place result.
Throughout the three-day preseason tournament, the Blues featured every player in their games against Western, Cégep Limoilou, TMU, and Nipissing. The Humber Cup served as the much-awaited first opportunity for the Blues men’s volleyball team to gauge their strengths and weaknesses in a game environment prior to the start of the quickly approaching season.
Beginning on Friday, Sept. 9, the U of T displayed their mettle in their first game of the tournament versus the Mustangs. Although they fell short 3-1, it was a chance for nearly the entire roster to complement each other’s fortes on court.
The next day, the Blues were defeated in three straight sets by Cégep Limoilou. Despite the loss, the team’s performance was admirable considering the mix of several new members to the team that were utilized.
Saturday afternoon, U of T triumphed over TMU 3-0 in their second match of the day, showcasing how quickly the team could mesh together.
Finally, the last game of the tournament took place on Sunday (Oct. 1) morning against Nipissing, where the game required five sets, seeing the Blues end the tournament on a 3-2 game victory. More importantly, this game also served as a testament to the technical skill and positive leadership present on court.
Toronto’s preseason schedule will continue next week when they travel for a neutral site game in Oakville challenging the Windsor Lancers on Friday, Oct. 13.
