McGill’s Iannotti selected U SPORTS volleyball player of the week

RICHMOND HILL, ONT. — McGill’s Victoria Iannotti and Trinity Western’s Jesse Elser are the U SPORTS volleyball players of the week for the period ending Feb. 12, 2023.

McGillians have now merited nine national weekly awards and eight such conference awards this season.

Also winning weekly honours in other sports were basketball players Amaiquen Siciliano (Bishop’s) and Diego Mafttia (Victoria), hockey players Katie Chomiak (Nipissing) and Patrick Kyte (ST.FX), swimmers Aleksa Gold (Toronto) and Noah Mascoll-Gomes (Dalhousie), wrestler Serena Di Benedetto (McMaster) and Treye Trotman (Western), along with track and field athletes Hillary Clark (Waterloo) and Philippe Morneau-Cartier (Laval).

Iannotti, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter from St. Laurent, Que., scored 42 points points as the Martlets split their two games over the weekend, defeating Laval 3-1 in Quebec City (Feb. 10) and losing 2-1 at home to Sherbrooke (Feb. 12. The results left McGill in second place with an 11-6 record and just one game remaining before playoffs. Iannotti, a 23-year-old software engineering senior, registered her points on the strength of 36 kills, one service ace, three stuff blocks and four assisted blocks over eight sets. On defence, she contributed 14 digs and three assists. A co-captain with the Martlets, Iannotti played her CEGEP volleyball at College Bois-de-Boulogne before joining the university ranks in 2019.
 
The Martlets’ next game is against the division-leading UQAM Citadins on Friday.

The national U SPORTS laureates from McGill have been bestowed upon volleyball’s Victoria Iannotti (Feb. 15), swimmers Pablo Collin (TWICE: Jan. 25, Feb. 8) and Isabel Sarty (TWICE: Nov. 23, Feb. 7), hockey’s Brandon Frattaroli (Nov. 30), field hockey’s Natalie Doehla (Oct. 12), cross-country’s Matthew Beaudet (Oct. 5) and soccer’s Ludovyck Ciociola (Sept. 21).

McGill’s conference honorees this season include hockey’s Brandon Frattaroli  in the OUA (Nov. 28), plus seven others from the RSEQ, namely swimming’s Pablo Collin (Feb. 7) and Isabel Sarty (TWICE: Nov. 22 & Feb. 7), track and field’s Donna Ntambue (Jan. 31), rugby’s Alexandre Laurendeau (Nov. 8), swimming’s Elizabeth Ling (Oct. 12) and soccer’s Ludovyck Ciociola (Sept. 20).
