BRANDON, MB – The Saskatchewan Huskies (12-6) were in Manitoba Friday night to take on the Brandon Bobcats (11-6). WIth two teams so close in the Canada West standings, the expectation was there for a close game. It wasn’t the Huskies night however, as they lost in straight sets to the Bobcats (20-25, 22-25, 20-25).
The Huskies struggled with service errors in the first set, which the Bobcats capitalized on to take the 25-20 win. The second set would see points go back and forth, with the Huskies leading 11-9, only to see a four point streak from Brandon to go up 13-11. Tied at 18-18 later in the set, the Bobcats would push hard and win the set 25-22. The third set would play out the same as the first, as the Bobcats would take the set 25-20 and the game win.
Brandon’s Philipp Lauter had a match-high 12 kills and just three errors to go with an ace and three blocks.
It was an off night for Huskies powerhouse Dylan Mortensen, who had one of his lowest scoring games of the season with just ten kills. Jake Rapin led the the team in assists with 32.
Both teams now share identical 12-7 records, making Saturday’s rematch even more interesting. The winner will hold sole possession of fourth place in the Canada West conference standings as the playoff season approaches.
First serve in Saturday’s match is set for 6:45 PM and can be streamed live on CanadaWest.TV.
