KINGSTON, Ont. (Jan. 27, 2023) – Queen’s Women’s Volleyball won against the Nipissing Lakers 3-1 (25-20, 25-14, 18-25, 25-14) Saturday at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.
Queen’s opened the first set confidently with four straight points before the Lakers were able to respond. An early ace by Arielle Palermo, as well as some impressive serves from Shea Baker and Amanda Siksna, helped the Gaels get ahead. The Lakers showed resilience, fighting to close the gap on the scoreboard, but Queen’s came out on top for the win, with a kill from Teah Cook to finish off the set.
In the second set, Lakers opened with a point and the score was tied 3-3 early on. This didn’t seem to faze the Gaels, as they quickly gained momentum to find themselves in an eight-point lead. Queen’s was able to maintain their lead and take the set comfortably with a score of 25-14.
The Lakers came out strong with an early lead in the third set. Queen’s tied it up 13-13, but Nipissing had a dominant response, pulling ahead to a six-point lead. Nipissing ended up taking the set 25-18.
The intensity was high for both teams going into the fourth set. Due to their strong offensive plays, the Gaels were leading with a score of 17-10 before Nipissing called a timeout. The Gaels finished the game by ending the set with an 11-point win.
Hannah Duchesneau led the Gaels offensively with 11 kills, and Mary Stewart recorded four aces. Shea Baker topped the stats board with 25 assists.
After the game, Baker spoke about how their serves being “lights-out” contributed to the win tonight. She also stated that the team’s main goal right now is getting to Nationals.
With the win, Queen’s improved their record to 12-4.
The Gaels are back in action Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. when they take on the Western Mustangs at the ARC.
