‘Pack can’t stop No. 6 Cascades from completing sweep

KAMLOOPS – The Fraser Valley Cascades took all three sets Saturday night, as they strode to a straight-sets victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s volleyball team by a score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-18).

TRU kept things close in the first but struggled to contain an explosive UFV offence that hit .293 per cent as a team and finished the night with nine service aces.

“We need to open up our hands,” said WolfPack head coach Behlul Yavasgel on what his team can improve on down the stretch run of their season. “We are holding our fists tight because we want it so bad, but we just need to step back and find the joy of  being on the court and good things will happen naturally.”

Brooklyn Olfert led the TRU attack with 11 kills on 26 attempts while Kate Lamothe continued to shine in a larger role with nine kills on the night. Abby Spratt finished with 20 assists and a service ace, the 130th ace of her Canada West career.

“I like that she’s so aggressive, she just goes for it no matter what,” said Yavasgel on Olfert’s play. “It’s awesome because she’s still just a second-year player, she has so much potential moving forward.”

Gabrielle Attieh was once again the key for UFV in attack. The fifth-year outside hitter finished the night with 15 kills on 26 swings for a sparkling .462 hitting percentage. Setter Caitlin Bitter racked up 27 assists and four service aces in the game.

After back-to-back weekends against teams ranked in the U SPORTS top 10, the ‘Pack will receive a well-deserved rest next weekend before returning to action on February 3 against the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton.
