PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women’s volleyball squad opened up their new year with a dominant showing over the Trent Excalibur earlier this afternoon, sweeping the last-placed side in a 3-0 win.
Outside hitter Julie Moore fired the bullets for the road side, putting up twelve kills on the afternoon while reinforcing her defensive presence with a season-high six total blocks in the lopsided win.
The veteran entered her first outing of 2023 sitting fourth in the OUA in both kills and kills per set. The fifth-year proceeded to mightily add to her total right off the hop against the Excalibur, pounding down four kills to open up the game’s initial set.
A hot start from Trent would quickly dissipate as the Bold began settling into the match. Moore’s partner in crime Ashley Ditchfield got the ball rolling for the blue and gold early on, unloading three consecutive kills to put the group’s offence into gear.
The back end of the initial set saw the Bold relentlessly apply the pressure to the home side and effortlessly closed out the frame leading the Excalibur by a whopping 12-point margin.
TMU’s momentum would spill over in the middle stanza as well, with Moore at the helm of it once more. Her three kills would be matched by her teammate Mikayla Sherriffs to fuel the offensive onslaught for the Bold in a set highlighted by the team’s six-point run to open things up.
By the midway mark of the frame, Trent owned a -0.26 hitting percentage while posting a lonesome kill to the scoreboard. The group’s accumulation of attacking errors would also play a costly role in shaping the final outcome of the set, as the Bold took the outing by a 25-11 score.
Although the page may have turned for the better in Trent’s third and final set, the group’s bid for a fourth frame continuously fell unsuccessful due to the strength of the Bold’s relentless attack.
With Moore continuing to deliver heavy swings, and TMU effectively playing a part on both sides of the net, the road side closed out the sweep with a 25-20 win in the third set of the match, extending the Excalibur’s winless streak to eight-consecutive games.
Now winners of three straight, the blue and gold set their eyes on Trent yet again to extend the cause, facing off with the green and white once more on Sunday afternoon at 1:00.
