The No. 4 Brock women’s volleyball team swept the Guelph Gryphons 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) during its home opener at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 13.
The Badgers also celebrated last season’s historic Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship by unveiling the 2021-22 banner prior to the match. The title was the first provincial championship in program history.
“To unveil our banner in front of our family, friends and fans is a special moment as we couldn’t have done it without their support,” said senior middle Christina Jovetic. “The banner represents what we accomplished as a team last season, but we’re excited to defend our OUA title. We’re prepared for the challenges ahead and looking forward to showing off the team cohesiveness and depth in our roster.”
In the opening set, the Gryphons took an early 5-2 lead before the Badgers battled back to win the set 25-20. Brock cruised to a 25-12 victory in the middle frame while posting a game-high .417 hitting percentage.
Brock’s third years posted several game-high stats as left side Madison Chimienti led the offence with 10 kills. The Badgers held the edge in digs 31-18 behind libero Aleiah Torres’ eight digs. Outside hitter Meera Sayal registered four service aces as Brock held an advantage from the service line 12-2.
Senior setter Sara Rohr dished out 23 assists while senior middles Grace Pyatt and Jovetic combined for 12 kills and four digs.
For Guelph, Sophie Fernback tallied 10 digs.
The Badgers hit the road to face off against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. before hosting the McMaster Marauders on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Bob Davis Gymnasium. The first serve is at 1 p.m. Tickets available for purchase at brocku.universitytickets.com.
