The Warriors opened up their 2022-23 season with a pair of road wins over the Windsor Lancers to get their season off on the right foot.
On Friday night, Waterloo was tested in each set but came through with a straight set victory over the Lancers with set scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-18.
To no one’s surprise, Sarah Glynn (Fredricton, NB/) was phenomenal for the Warriors with a game high 20.5 points thank to 18 kills, two service aces and one assisted block. Jennifer Zhu (Oakville, ON/) was next best with nine points while rookie Avery Isaacs (Calgary, AB/) had seven in her first regular season match with the black and gold. Setting up the Warriors in the match was veteran Claire Gagne (Cambridge, ON/) who had 33 assists in the win. Defensively, Alex Sinik (Calgary, AB/) was solid with 11 digs while Avery Kelly (Calgary AB/) and Gagne each had nine.
On Saturday night, Waterloo earned a 3-1 victory over the Lancers. The Warriors came out strong winning the first two sets, 25-22, 25-21 before Windsor won the third 25-20. The Warriors stuck with their game plan and closed out the match in four dominating the final set 25-15.
Glynn was outstanding once againg with 18.5 points on 16 kills, one service ace and three assisted blocks. Zhu and Lauren Hebert (Burlington, ON/) both contributed with 8.5 points each including a strong net performance from Hebert with four blocks while Kelly earned seven points in the win. Gagne collected 38 more assists in the match while Sinik and Glynn were the defensive leaders with nine digs each.
Waterloo will continue their season next weekend with two more road games as they make the lengthy trip to Thunder Bay to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves before they return to Carl Totzke Court for their home opener on Friday, November 18 against the always competitve Brock Badgers.
