The first set saw the Huskies jump out to a quick 9-2 lead. The Griffins battled back to bring it within three at 21-18 for the Huskies, but the hometown team was able to hold them in check to take the first set 25-20.
The second set saw both teams unwilling to give an inch. The Griffins were able to claw their way to a 20-18 lead before Abbey Klein served for seven straight points for the Huskies to win the set 25-20.
MacEwan was looking to take the third set but the Huskies were focused and executing at all levels. Saskatchewan’s offense proved to be too much for the Griffins, however, with the Huskies taking the third set 25-14 and sweeping the match in straight sets.
Saskatchewan rookie Abbey Klein had 12 kills in the night to lead the Huskies while MacEwan’s Mariah Beresiuk was a force for the Griffins with 10 kills and two aces. Averie Allard had a game high 24 assists on the night, with MacEwan’s Payton Shimoda leading the Griffins with 14.
Setter Averie Allard was happy with the team’s performance in the series sweep. “I think it was pretty amazing to come back home after last season when we left off on a pretty hard loss in the playoffs. Being back at home with the weekend sweep, we couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Allard was also impressed with the fans to open the season. “I think every year our fans get better and better and louder and louder.”
The Huskies are back in action next weekend in Abbotsford taking on UFV. Live stream of the match available on CanadaWest.TV
