Six members of the 2022 U SPORTS Champion Golden Bears volleyball team will swap their Green & Gold atire for Red & White this summer.
Student-athletes Jordan Canham, Landon Currie, Max Elgert, Braedon Friesen and Isaac Heslinga will join the Volleyball Canada National team this summer, and will join the national training program in Gatineau, Quebec. Additionally, head coach Brock Davidiuk has been named an assistant coach for the Senior Men’s National team, under head coach Ben Josephson.
The senior team will be preparing for Volleyball Nations League, which has a stop in Ottawa in early June, as well other major events including the 2022 World Championship.
“These five individuals have committed an immense and incredible amount of time through the COVID year, and this previous season to make the Golden Bears Volleyball Championship dream a reality,” said Davidiuk. “Consequently they have made awesome improvements in their individual game as well. It’s so great to see that rewarded through their respective national team selections”
As an athlete, Davidiuk spent eight seasons with the senior Canadian national team (2004-12), captaining the 2010 team at the FIVB World Championship in Italy.
Canham, Currie, Elgert, Friesen and Heslinga helped the Bears capture their 9th U SPORTS Championship in program history in late March, as they defeated the No. 1 seed Trinity Western Spartans in the national final in Winnipeg. Canham was named the U SPORTS Championship MVP, with Currie and Heslinga also being named tournament all-stars.
Heslinga capped off his remarkable freshman season by being named the 2022 University of Alberta’s Male Rookie of the Year.
