The Dinos jumped out to a commanding 2-0 set lead to start the match. The Marauders took the third set, 25-21, to pull themselves back into the contention, but Calgary rebounded in the fourth to secure the win and a birth in the national semifinals.
Fourth-year Dino Tomas Sorra tallied 36 assists and seven digs to help propel his squad to victory. McMaster’s Sam Cooper led both teams with 23 kills on 47 attempts while also putting down seven aces.
“Tommy has played on the big stage. He’s really calm and can compete,” Calgary head coach Rod Durrant said. “He’s our quarterback. He’s our guy. He runs our offence – it goes through him. We talk about it every pregame and in video sessions…Tommy’s in there and he’s got his goal and his plan and I thought he did a very good job distributing the ball today. He did a good job of keeping them (McMaster) guessing on the left side and the right side. Hamish did a good job on the right side. It all started by our setting.”
Calgary, the 2022 Canada West bronze medallists, recorded a .271 hitting percentage in the match while keeping McMaster off balance all match and limiting them to hit .202.
With the win the Dinos advance to semifinal 1 on Saturday, March 26 at 5 p.m MT where they will face the Alberta Golden Bears for the eighth time this season. Calgary has a 3-4 record against Alberta this year. The McMaster Marauders will move to the consolation bracket and play the Queen’s Golden Gaels at 11:30 p.m. MT on Saturday, March 26.
