Mustangs close out regular season with 3-1 loss to Gryphons

Guelph, ON – To round out the regular season, the Mustangs hit the road to take on the Gryphons, ultimately losing in 4 sets.

While the hosts claimed the first two, Western battled back in the third, but the comeback fell just short. Jackson Bere led the way for the Mustangs with 13 kills and 3 blocks.

The start saw an exchanging of points to keep the score tight, up until Guelph secured a slight lead at 14-11, before the Mustangs tied it up at 17. The Gryphons managed to hold on to secure a 25-20 first set victory.

Guelph got off to a 4-1 start in the second, but captain Amit Sayal would tie things up for the purple and white at 8.

Some big kills from Blake Fenwick and Jonah Millard would keep the Mustangs within reach, yet Guelph continued to ride their momentum to a 21-16 lead that proved too big to overcome. They eventually took the second 25-20 off of a Western serving error.

In the third, it was the Mustangs who got out to an early lead winning the first two points, before the hosts took the lead at 5-4 off of an ace. Much like the first two sets, it was a back and forth affair.

Western was determined to battle back however, and two blocks by Josh Thorson and Jonah Millard would put the Mustangs up 9-5.

Guelph followed up with a run of their own, winning 5 out of the next 6 points. However, solid serving from Blake Fenwick that included an ace would help the purple and white go up by 4 at the technical timeout.

The hosts would battle back to tie things up at 24, but Millard would reclaim set point for the ‘Stangs which they wouldn’t let slip away this time, as they took the third set 26-24.

Guelph took an early lead in the fourth as they looked to prevent this one from going the distance, eventually doubling up on the Mustangs at 14-7. The Mustangs wouldn’t be able to comeback, as they dropped the fourth 25-16.

With the loss Western drops to 4-5 on the season, whereas Guelph improves to 3-9.
