The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team lost to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in four sets on Friday night in Regina.
The Huskies were led by outside hitter Emily Koshinsky, who had a match-high 19 kills and a match-high five service aces. Saskatchewan libero Jessica Andjelic contributed all over the court, finishing with a match-high 25 digs, three assists, and three kills. Outside hitter Jessica Lerminiaux added a team-high 16 kills and eight digs for the Cougars.
Saskatchewan dominated in the first set, taking it 25-14 to get an early lead on the Cougars. The second set was closer, as Cougars fought back from being down 23-20 to make it 23-22 for the Huskies. Saskatchewan proceeded to get the next two points to take the second set 25-22.
In the third set, the game was tied 13-13. Regina players Nya Chiek and Claire Sheppard made two assisted blocks in what became a six point run by the Cougars to take a commanding 19-13 lead. Devyn Grimsrud’s kill finished off the third set to help the Cougars take it 25-17.
The fourth set was hard fought by both sides as neither team refused to go away. The Cougars were up 25-24 and were only a point away from forcing a fifth set. The Huskies ensured that it would not happen as a Koshinsky service ace ended the final set 28-26 to give them the win.
Saskatchewan got contributions from Olivia Mattern (nine kills, 11 digs), Elyse Allard (seven blocks, four digs) and Devyn Ethier (five kills, five assists, nine digs).
Cougars setter Cassadi Klapak had a team-high 34 assists and also added six digs. Grimsrud finished with eight kills and a team-high three aces.
The two teams face off again tomorrow at 6:00, at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.
