Return to Volleyball update regarding Step 1 and Ontario Government orders

The Government of Ontario announced on May 20, 2021 that it is easing the restrictions on Outdoor Activities, releasing a new three step “Roadmap to Re-Opening” framework. As communicated to Membership on May 20, the OVA continues to eagerly await sport specific information and regulations from the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. Once these regulations are received, the OVA can provide more guidance to membership on what the re-opening framework will mean for our sport.

Although the Ontario Stay-at-Home orders expired on June 2nd, nothing has changed for team sport at this time.

Unfortunately, until more information is available from the Government of Ontario, no organized team sports such as volleyball (indoor and outdoor) is permitted under the Government Public Health orders. This means that it is illegal to participate in any volleyball activity (training or competitions).

The current, estimated start date for Step 1 of the Government of Ontario’s new Roadmap to Re-Opening Framework is June 14, 2021.

Looking forward to Step 1 of Ontario’s plan, the Ontario website states that:

  • Outdoor team sport can only offer training programs for up to 10 people (maximum);
  • Participants must maintain 3 metres distance at all times, and;
  • Indoor team sport is not permitted except for high-performance athletes (Olympic athletes), social services and physical therapy.

Further membership updates will be provided as soon as known from the provincial government authorities.
