CALGARY, AB – Dominance all night long.
The Mount Royal University Cougars women’s volleyball team swept the University of Regina Cougars 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-16) Friday evening at Kenyon Court.
Mount Royal was forced to play without their captain and star outside hitter, Jessica Osczevski in Friday’s battle on the court. However, second-year Megan Jones filled in seamlessly for the home team.
Jones served back-to-back aces midway through the first set to give MRU a stranglehold on the game.
Sydney Scatcherd registered six kills in the first, guiding MRU to a commanding first-set win. Scatcherd totalled a game-high 12 kills in the game.
Although possessing a physically smaller group of players, Regina’s defence showed spurts of energy. The visiting side was able to deny Mount Royal at the net a couple of times.
In the second set, Mount Royal looked a little timid. The team had a brief scare as setter Lexi Herrod took a ball to the face and was shaken up. However, Herrod showed off her toughness and didn’t think about coming out of the game for a second.
The two teams jostled for momentum, going point-for-point through the second.
Regina’s go-to option Bailey Balaberda made her presence felt, hammering down a few kills and taking the reins for her team’s offence.
Despite Balaberda’s elevated play, MRU took the second set and looked to call it a night early.
Just as it had been in the first two sets, Regina was overwhelmed by Mount Royal’s powerful attack. MRU made quick work in the third and took the set by nine points, concluding the evening.
Regina (1-20) and Mount Royal (7-12) will rematch from Kenyon Court on Saturday at 5 p.m. MRU will honour their graduating players, Jessica Osczevski and Sarah McKillican before the opening serve.
