Queen’s Women’s Volleyball secured a five-set win in their Saturday match up against the Waterloo Warriors (25-23, 25-13, 20-25, 25- ). After dropping the third and fourth set, the Gaels came back with a vengeance to bag the fifth and the win.
Amanda Siksna (Education) led the team in points with 14.Siksna added eight kills and fiveblocks and was also a force from the service line with two service aces.
“Honestly shout out to our setter Kennedy, she distributed the sets really well and found those gaps which was really good,” Siksna remarked.
Thought the first, Queen’s picked up a consistent lead, aided by kills from Aimee Lemire (Education) and Hannah Duchesneau (Arts & Science).
The Gaels followed up the first set with a commanding second; the Warriors could not contain Queens’ aggressive offense.
The third and fourth set were neck and neck, with the Gaels ultimately trailing and dropping both sets.
“It was a bit of a roller coaster. In sets one and two we were in control, and we felt really confident. After that you could start to see the doubt start to creep in, maybe a bit of pressure that started to set in,” Head Coach Shanice Marcelle reflected.
The Gaels came out with renewed vigor in the fifth set. Despite trailing at the beginning, Queen’s banded together, tied it up with the Warriors, and then pulled ahead to secure the win.
“The girls did a really good job in the fifth set of resetting, and I saw a level of passion and fire from them that I haven’t seen yet,” Marcelle said.
“I think we just stayed together, united. We had a goal. We were determined and dialed. I think we did just a really good job at staying focused,” Siksna added.
With the win, the Gaels’ record on the season improves to 7-1, and are ranked provisionally second in the OUA.
The Gaels head to the road next weekend to take on the York Lions. The team plays at 6 pm on Friday, Nov. 22, and at 4 pm on Saturday, Nov 23. The games are available to stream on oua.tv.
