Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 It was a strong start to the season for the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team this weekend on the road.
The Lakers used a hot start Friday night to grab a 2-0 lead and held on to beat the Guelph Gryphons 3-2 in the season opening match on the road.
Nipissing dropped a four-set decision the following night, settling for a weekend split away from home.
Friday night, the Lakers won 25-10 and 25-20 before dropping the third and fourth sets.
They would rebound nicely with a 15-9 victory in the fifth and deciding set to salvage the match and claim the victory.
Paige Owen had a big match, posting 15 points, while Amy Connelly had 13, Kristine Ledger had 11 and Madison Murphy and Oceane Raymond each chipped in with 10 in the Lakers victory.
In the second match of the weekend, a slower start hurt Nipissing, as they went down 2-0 – 25-23 and 25-15 before picking up a win in the third set to extend the match.
Unfortunately they dropped a tight fourth set, 25-23 forcing them to settle for a split of the opening two matches of the season.
Leading the Lakers offensively were Raymond with 18 total points and Connelly who added 14 in Saturday’s match.
Nipissing will head to a bye weekend next before hosting Lakehead in a few weeks in North Bay.
