After picking up two big wins last weekend at home, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was planning on more of the same this weekend.
Playing their second straight weekend at home, the Lakers welcomed the Western Mustangs to the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre for the first of two matches this weekend.
The Lakers made it three straight wins as they topped the Mustangs 3-1 in an very impressive effort.
To kick things off in the first set, the Lakers trailed early, but turned things around quickly, turning an 8-6 deficit into a 15-15 tie.
From there, Nipissing built up a 21-20 lead, shutting down a comeback from the Mustangs as they fought their way to a 25-23 win in the first set.
With the Lakers up 1-0, the teams got back at it in the second set which saw another even set.
Western grabbed an early lead and would stay out in front of the Lakers throughout the set, despite a big pushback by Nipissing in the middle of the game.
A late Nipissing push wasn’t enough, as Western tied the match 1-1 thanks to a 25-20 win in the second set.
These evenly teams traded points, big runs and some really entertaining volleyball all night and the third set was no different.
After trailing 18-17 midway through the set, the Lakers stormed back to take a 22-20 lead and battled their way to a 25-22 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
With the chance to wrap things up, the Lakers made no mistake in taking care of business.
After leading 6-3 early, Nipissing built up their advantage to 15-12 midway through the set and dominated down the stretch.
After lead 20-14, the Lakers put the match away winning 25-20.
