WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS FALL IN STRAIGHT SETS TO MCMASTER

Published on

Box Score Facing a tough test to begin the 2024 portion of the OUA season, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was back in action Friday night.

The Lakers welcomed the McMaster Marauders to town to begin the first of two matches on the weekend in North Bay.

In a tough start to the second semester, the Lakers fell 3-0 to the Marauders.

A slow start hurt the Lakers saw them trail 9-4 early on and 20-13 late in the set.

They were able to battle back late in the set, but eventually dropped the opening game 25-20.

In the second set, the Lakers fell behind early on once again, trailing 10-6.

McMaster was able to keep a healthy lead on the Lakers throughout the set, pushing their advantage to 16-8 and 22-13.

They finally wrapped up the game, winning 25-15 to go up 2-0 in the match.

The third set was much of the same, unfortunately for the Lakers, as they trailed early and despite battling back and pushing towards the end of the set, they were unable to comeback.

In the end, trailing 13-7 midway through the third and 22-17 was too much to overcome for Nipissing, as they lost what turned out to be the final set by a final of 25-17.

Amy Connelly led the Lakers with 11 kills, while Paige Owen added nine in the contest.

The teams close out their weekend series with an afternoon match Saturday.

Things get underway at 4pm at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
