Box Score After a thrilling and solid win Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was back in action Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers hosted the Waterloo Warriors for the second straight match after a 3-1 win in the first meeting of the season.
Nipissing made it a clean sweep, earning a second straight 3-1 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.
In a back and forth opening set, after being tied 5-5 early on, the Lakers led 12-11 midway through and grabbed a 17-13 advantage heading towards the end of the first set.
Up 21-16, the Lakers were unable to lock down the set, eventually falling 26-24.
In the second set, Nipissing stormed back to even the match.
After leading 7-4 earlier, the Lakers stayed out in front the majority of the way and held a slight 19-17 advantage late in the set.
They held on late, winning 25-22.
With the match tied 1-1, the Lakers carried their momentum into the third set, controlling much of the play.
Nipissing led 11-9 early on and stay out in front, winning 25-15 to go up 2-1.
Looking to put the match away, the Lakers were strong again early in the fourth set and carried a 17-11 lead in the latter stages of the set.
Nipissing didn’t miss the chance to put the match away despite a late push.
The Lakers grabbed a 25-20 win in what turned out to be the final set.
Paige Owen had another monster effort, posting 21 kills for the Lakers, while Oceane Raymoind-Leduc and Amy Connelly each added 14 in the victory.
The Lakers hit the road next weekend, heading to Toronto for a pair of matches against the Varsity Blues.
Nipissing hits the court both Friday and Saturday at 8pm at the Goldring Centre.
