The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell 3-1 to the No. 5 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders on Saturday (Jan. 20) evening in Hamilton, Ont.
Set scores for the match were 12-25, 32-30, 20-25, 19-25.
Despite the loss, the Blues demonstrated their ability to battle tough teams. In the second set, the Blues bested McMaster in seven of their set points. The Blues led the Marauders in total attacks for the game (172-170). They were also able to play a smooth game as they had minimal blocking and serving errors compared to the Marauders.
Leading the offence for the Blues were outside hitters Olivia Zhu and Julia Murmann. Zhu led the team with 18 points. She totalled her points from 16 kills, one ace, and two block assists. Murmann tallied 15 points from 14 kills and one ace. Blues setter Anna Arellano totalled 27 assists, while libero Delaney Watson totalled 19 digs.
McMaster’s outside hitter Emma McKinnon led the match tallying 21 total points on the night from 17 kills, three service aces, and one solo block.
The Blues return to action next Friday (Jan. 26) evening when they take on Royal Military College of Canada at Goldring Centre. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tickets for Blues home games are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, while all matches are also streamed online at oua.tv.
