In their final game of 2024, Queen’s Women’s Volleyball took on the Toronto Varsity Blues and found another straight set win — their seventh of the regular season (25-19, 25-23, 18-25).
While the Blues got the first point, it was the Gaels that got the next six. Queen’s kept their momentum going and built a seven point lead.
Their offensive pressure, championed by Mary Stewart(Education) and Hannah Duchesneau (Arts & Science) brought Queen’s the set.
Stewart closed out the match with 12 kills; Duchesneau amassed nine.
Toronto picked up the pace in the second set. The Blues pulled ahead at the 11-point mark and maintained the point differential
“Toronto did a good job of pushing us, I think it was partly on our side. Maybe a few more errors in that second set and a little bit of complacency,” Head Coach Shanice Marcelle said.
After a well called time out, the Gaels came back from behind and cinched the set, aided by a service ace from Claire Carter (Business).
“I think our serve pass game is something that we’ve been working on all season, and I think it really showed tonight. Claire really came out in that second set and aced them to get us to win that second set,” Libero Holly Biasi remarked.
Carter rounded out the match with five service aces, the most of both teams.
The Gaels returned to their typical dominate style of play in the third and easily took the set.
In the win, Biasi led the team in digs with 12. Biasi also contributed four assists.
“Holly is such a stellar leader with the level of play and energy she brings. She’s always been a really solid player for us on serve receive and today was a good match for her on the defensive end,” Marcelle said.
Heading into the winter break, Women’s Volleyball has a 11-1 record on the season, is on a nine-game win streak, and is ranked provisionally first in the OUA.
“Our end goal is to get to nationals,” Marcelle added.
The Gaels return to play on Jan. 17, when they take on the Guelph Gryphons. Fans can catch the action on oua.tv.
