KAMLOOPS – An explosive signing will add another layer of athleticism to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s volleyball team for the 2022-23 season, after interim head coach Behlul Yavasgel announced that Abby Mohrbutter will join the squad.
“Abby is unique because she moves very well but she’s so strong and big,” said Yavasgel of the 6-2 middle. “So, for how tall she is she moves extremely well.”
The first recruit for the ‘Pack in their 2022-23 class, Mohrbutter is an addition that kicks things off with a bang for TRU.
“I chose the ‘Pack for two main reasons: the team culture and the coaching staff,” said Mohrbutter. “The girls were very welcoming and friendly and while attending their practice and when watching their games I loved their energy, enthusiasm and support for each other.
The coaching staff I found very relatable, supportive and well respected and liked by the players which is very important as I know the first year attending university can be challenging.”
A member of Team Saskatchewan for the past four years, Mohrbutter comes from the small town of Redvers near the Manitoba border but plays her club volleyball for Sask Stealth in Regina.
“Abby has been very determined to play volleyball, she’s been travelling two hours a day to practice out of town,” said Yavasgel. “She was a high-priority recruit for other universities, so we are very happy to have her join our team.”
Boasting an attack vertical of well over ten feet, Mohrbutter and Yavasgel are in agreement that her physicality is one of her greatest strengths.
“On and off the court I enjoy cheering, celebrating and being vocal,” said Mohrbutter. “My physicality and strength at the net in blocking and attacking is where I hope to make an impact.”
Poised to join the ‘Pack for next season, Mohrbutter is someone that Yavasgel sees complimenting the contingent of middles that the WolfPack already have.
“It’s a massive signing because we have very good middles that are technical, fast and learn quick but when you have that much size it will only add to our team’s physicality,” said Yavasgel. “We are very excited to have Abby join our team. With her physicality and how dedicated she is I think she will push other girls to get better and I’m excited to work with her and take her game to the next level.”
