Continuing their preseason schedule, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team defeated the visiting Waterloo Warriors 3-1 on Friday (Oct. 27) night at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
Competing in their eighth contest in a busy preseason schedule, Toronto were able to dispatch of the Warriors in the closely contested four set match. Set scores were 25-18, 17-25, 30-28, 25-23.
Leading the charge for the Blues offence was third-year outside hitter Connor Vanderkuip who tallied a game-high 21.5 points from 20 kills, one solo block, and one block assist. Fellow third-year outside hitter Jack Li added another 14 points, recording 10 kills, two service aces, one solo block, and two block assists. Rounding out the double-digit performers, veteran middle John Dunning controlled the net with an impressive four solo blocks and two block assists, adding four kills and one ace to complete his stat line for the night.
Second-year setter Michael Hickey guided the Blues offence through all four sets, registering a game-high 39 assists. Defensively, Li topped the Blues with 10 digs, while four others recorded six or more digs in the solid team defensive performance.
Toronto are right back on home court tomorrow (Oct. 28) afternoon challenging the Brock Badgers in the final tune-up before the OUA regular season kicks-off next weekend. First serve in the preseason match is set for 4 p.m., with tickets available online at varsityblues.ca/tickets.
